Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a professional needing reliable gear, or someone seeking optimal warmth, Thinsulate’s innovative insulation technology is poised to reshape your cold weather experiences.

What is Thinsulate Insulation

Thinsulate is a lightweight product made of synthetic fibers, found mainly in clothing, gloves, and boots. Its ability to maintain its thermal properties even when wet makes it an excellent choice for boot insulation. Thinsulate is measured in grams and comes in weights anywhere from 200-2000 grams. But the question is, how much do we need to be comfortable while hunting? This depends on the elements such as temperature, elevation, humidity/moisture, and even sock thickness. Let’s look at some of the various weights and pair them with the situation that might arise.

200 Grams

A pair of boots with 200 grams of Thinsulate is designed to be used in cool weather with not much movement. They work best for me at temps around 50 degrees.  They can also be used in colder climates if you are planning to spot and stalk, without your feet becoming too hot. It just really depends on how active you’re going to be on the hunt.

400 Grams

In cooler weather where low to moderate movement is the case, 400 grams will be ideal. Once again, if you plan on stalking a deer, or what have you, in colder weather, you’ll be covered as far as warmth goes. If the temp drops below 40 degrees and you’re stationary you may want to go with heavier insulation.

600 Grams

At 600 grams of Thinsulate, it will keep you comfortably warm in colder weather, with light levels of activity. I use 600 grams at temps below 30 degrees when I’m in a deer stand and it is perfect for me, but it does come down to how active you will be. If you plan to still hunt your way through the woods, moving slowly, this is a good option.

800 Grams

This level of insulation is for very cold conditions with minor to moderate movement. If it’s 20 degrees and you’re still most of the hunt you will be comfortable. If your intention is moving a lot it could cause your feet to sweat. Then when you stop for an extended period of time it can cause your feet to get cold.

1000 Grams

Boots with this much insulation are for freezing weather. We’re talking single digits with snow and ice.  This will be a very warm hunting boot while sitting for a few hours, but if you are walking through snow or your feet are in snow for a while, your feet will become cold.

1200 + Grams

If you find yourself in negative-degree weather, then this is the amount of warmth you’ll need. Especially if you intend to be moving through water and snow. I personally haven’t tested a boot over 1200 grams of Thinsulate, but this is the warmest boot you’ll need in my opinion, and I’ve only seen boots go up to 1400 grams. I just can’t imagine a situation where you will be hunting and need that much protection from the cold.

Thinsulate insulation stands as a testament to innovative engineering that delivers exceptional warmth and comfort. Its ability to provide efficient insulation without adding bulk has transformed the way we approach cold weather protection. From clothing and footwear to outdoor equipment, Thinsulate has become a hallmark of quality and performance, ensuring that individuals can brave the harshest conditions while maintaining freedom of movement and style.
